Avatar
Hello everyone! Here’s a pic of the avatar I’ve used in the last two Checkpoint and which I’ll be using, going forward!
You might also have noticed the change in layout in the last strip I published, it’s an attempt at a more conventional format (namely A5) and at finding a template for upcoming notes…
…As well as former ones.
Indeed, I might (just might)...

Retcon
Hi mates,
Salut à vous,
I’m cleaning up the site and totally retcon-ing the strips to match the new style.
Je nettoie le site et je m’apprête à complètement tricher et renommer/dater les strips pour que ça colle avec le nouveau style que j’utilise maintenant.
I’m going to rename the old notes as “Archives” and hide the pictures through a “read...

Now Playing : Animal Crossing
These days I’m playing a lot of Animal Crossing (the City Folk one, although it’s not like there’s any difference between two “iterations”, right, Nintendo?) and what can I say, this game is the devil.

Despite its light-hearted visual style and its simple premise, AC is a pretty dense game.
There’s a lifetime...

The Boy Without a Fairy
Hey chaps,
Here are a couple of pictures I made for a zine edited by the pretty cool Cory Shmitz. It’s games-related, so it’s not too irrelevant to this tumblr, is it?
New actual checkpoint coming soon, promise! ^^

UI RESCUE SQUAD
It’s a dirty job but someone’s gotta do it.
Howdiho! Here’s my loonnnng overdue weekly post on this blog! I’d like to thank you all who didn’t unfollow me because I wasn’t posting anything! ^^
Today, a more personal note, yet still games-related. I’m a UI artist and more often than not, I get to help games out by rushing in and make the UI happen,...

ARCHIVES - Foundation
This is a thought I’ve had recently, that many of the really good games around have one very strong central game mechanic which you could almost use alone and beat the entire game with, still having a huge fun.
Super Mario Bros. is an obvious example of that, the jumping system being that core feature I’m referring to. You could use the fire flowers, it makes the game more...

When you leave...
Hey, here’s a little break from the usual theme, although it’s still somewhat related to video games. It’s a short comic I made for Maré Odomo, as a reply to his awesome “Letters To an Absent Father”. I hope you’ll like it! (Tumblr doesn’t like large pictures, so go check them on Deviant Art, if you don’t mind! Page 1 and page 2)

Today, some reflection on basic differences between occidental and japanese game design.
Also, watercolour. I suck at it. Please be nice.

ARCHIVES - Point
Ok, this is quite a heavy topic so allow me to word it a bit more.
I can’t exactly remember when it all started, but I feel it’s been about 15 years since video games started to shout aloud their wish to be considered as an art form.
While I certainly cannot say that I don’t want them to be or think they can’t be, I have a hard time justifying ALL of them as pieces...

Who, me?
Hi, and welcome to my checkpoint!
I’m Matthieu ‘Pixoshiru’ Gallais, an aspiring illustrator/comic book artist who, for some reason, is managing to do every other possible job on earth except those two.
I’m posting here my occasional thoughts about videogames, game design, and any other aspect of them I could have something to try to sound clever by.
I wish you’ll...
